I love this picture! I remember that place and Dover St and the South End, that's where my heart is.
George, I been looking over your blog. Seems like you been around Boston, like me. I remember Dover when it was skid row, before they tore down all the buildings between Tremont and Washington. I remember all the liquor stores and missions that used to line the street, and the bums and the hookers. And how about that strip on Tremont between Berkeley and the tracks going towards town? What a rowdy place that was back in the fifties. I remember a place where I could buy a switch blade down by the station where the trolleys went into the subway. Try buying a switch blade today!
Those pictures of Chinatown are plenty nice too. You got any pictures of the Combat Zone? I loved that place.
That guy with the 25 cents clipped to his hat looks like my father. He ain't, but my father was always smiling and trying to make a buck anyway he could to help feed us kids. I had ten brothers and sisters.
I know I'm rambling. Sorry. I'm coming back though.
Mordecai: Wow, where do I start? I remember all of that too, did we go to school together? I'm not sure about Combat Zone pictures, I'm searching through my old photos on a daily basis. I know I took a lot of pictures in the Combat Zone, but they may be slides and not prints. Thanks for stopping by!

These pictures are amazing. I just googled Harry the Greek to see if I could find any old pictures and came across these. They really take me back!

billkam -- many years ago, I did a woodcut and paintings of Harry the Greeks'. A print of HTG's is in the collection of the print department of the BPL and has been exhibited at the SMFA and other places around Boston.

I was looking for the name of the deli at the corner of Dover and Washington -- the Premier -- and found your wonderful photos. My curiousity has the better of me. Your photos looked like you've "played" with them to get the look they have. I'd be interested in what, if anything, you did to get the look they have.
